Nicole Kidman is the latest celebrity to take to Instagram to share her love of Mallorca. But what is it that makes this Balearic Island such a hit with the international celebrity community?
Local Mallorca resident Marc Pritchard, Sales and Marketing Director at Taylor Wimpey España shares the island’s secrets…
Prime among Mallorca’s myriad charms is its breathtaking scenery. For an island that is
only about twice the size of London, it delivers a huge range of vistas, from mountain terrain
to rolling hills to its incredible coastline. In addition to sandy beaches, the island boasts
rocky sea pools and watery caves, as well as natural springs and waterfalls further inland.
Mallorca’s weather, of course, plays a big part in its attraction. The island enjoys mild
winters and hot summers with long, sun-filled days, meaning it’s perfect for spending time
outdoors year-round. The sea temperature hits an average of 25°C in some parts of the
island during July, August, and September, and only drops just below 15°C between January
and March, so there’s a really long season for enjoying time in the water.
Another reason that Mallorca is such a hit with celebrities is its wealth of upscale dining options and its lively nightlife. The local cuisine features plenty of fish (as you would expect
of an island!), along with pork, vegetables, local cheeses, olive oils, and a selection of super-sweet desserts. Whether you’re after a sophisticated evening meal at one of Mallorca’s five
Michelin-star restaurants or simply a casual, flavour-packed lunch in an idyllic waterside setting, the island can provide everything you wish for.
As the sun goes down, Palma comes alive to the sound of music, providing plenty of options
for those looking to dance the night away, as well as quieter spots, to stop for cocktails.
There are also casino and dancing shows for those looking for an alternative night out.
With many of Mallorca’s most delicious and delicate desserts featuring a generous dollop of
lard in their recipes, many celebs are keen to stay active during their time on the island.
Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to do so. Mallorca is famous for its challenging cycling
conditions, though the spectacular scenery is well worth the effort. Mallorca is also home to
world-class tennis facilities, thanks in large part to Rafael Nadal, who was born on the island,
along with a huge range of water sports, from scuba diving to parasailing.
Mallorca also delivers plenty of variety on the property front. From light-filled apartments in
picturesque villages (check out Es Balcò, which has homes from €315,000 plus VAT), to
detached villas with private pools (Las Villas de Dalt de Sa Rapita, from €725,000 plus VAT),
there’s something to suit every taste.
Buildings-wise, there are plentiful opportunities to enjoy beautiful, ancient architecture on
the island, from cathedrals and castles to splendid palaces. On the cultural side, there are
also museums and art galleries, along with a year-round calendar of local fiestas, fairs, and
fetes.
It is this rich blend of attractions that makes Mallorca such a special place – one that wins a
place in the hearts of even the most well-travelled of celebrities.
