Sun is shining, and spring is officially here. But, a glimpse of sunshine doesn’t always translate to scorching temperatures – especially in the UK.
So, while it might not be quite the right time to jump headfirst into your warm-weather wardrobe, what you can do is start introducing some of those all-important accessories that work hard to make you feel like spring really has sprung.
From jewellery to neck scarves, Thread stylist Millie Rich spills all the trending accessories sure to make a mark on your spring wardrobe this year.
Classic silk scarves
This classic has been a mainstay in all the most fashionable women’s wardrobes for generations, including the likes of Brigitte Bardot and Marilyn Monroe.
It’s perfect for a super quick styling hack that makes any outfit instantly chic – plus it’s a subtle way to add a little print and colour. But, the best part is, its infinite styling opportunities means anyone can make it fit seamlessly within their aesthetic.
Below are a few of the best ways this Spring:
Around the neck
Fold the scarf into a triangle shape, place the middle of the scarf on the front of your neck and tie it in a knot – you can tuck the edge in if you prefer a cleaner look.
Around the head
For a vintage feel, fold the scarf into a triangle, tie your hair into a ponytail, place the straight side just above your hairline, and tie at the nape of your neck.
Around a ponytail or bun
Again, start by folding the scarf into a triangle, this time you’ll want to then fold the scarf up from the pointed side until you’ve created a long rectangle shape. Then, you’re easily able to wrap this around your pony or bun, tying it in a knot and leaving some of the fabric to fall down your back.
Bold, statement bags
After all the neutrals and darker tones that rule the colder months, some arm candy that works hard to liven up your wardrobe is always welcome.
And with this trend, it’s truly the bolder the better. Think neon pinks, bold greens, and candied oranges – which may sound scary, but often this kind of accessory styled with a pared-back look is where it looks best.
Or, if you’re into colour-blocking, some of our favourite pairings are chocolate brown with sky blue, and acid green with yellow.
Slip-on shoes
Since lockdown, anything slip-on has reigned supreme as the ultimate shoe choice, and luckily, this season is no exception. While it’s not quite open-toe shoe weather just yet, many of us are already dying to wear anything that isn’t a boot or trainer.
This is where those backless slipper-style clogs and mules come in – working just as successfully with joggers and they do with something tailored.
They’re perfect for embodying an effortless feel, and for the fact you can confidently wear them with socks.
Return of the bucket hat
Once a festival exclusive, bucket hats made their comeback a few years back and have remained a spring and summer staple ever since. Now, hats can be a polarising topic at times, with many of us having a deep-rooted fear of feeling silly. But, the most important thing to remember about hats is they’re easy to take on and off depending on your mood.
We champion a bucket hat as a great entry-level option because it’s a slightly more feminine style than a cap, and a less fussy, more contemporary version of a straw sunhat.
Pearl accessories
Another classic that is having a modern update are pearls. Once saved for special occasions only, pearls can now be worn pretty much whenever you want. You’ll be glad to know you don’t have to invest in the real deal to get involved with this trend, there are plenty of faux pearl options around too.
When shopping, look for modern designs perhaps with chunky gold chain detailing and pearls attached, as opposed to going for full pearls. This helps ensure they’ll work equally as well with jeans and a tee as they do with an elegant dress, if you’re going all-out Grace Kelly.
